MOUNT PLEASANT - The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team got a pair of big wins over a team ahead of it in the Midwest Collegiate Conference standings with a doubleheader sweep of Waldorf College Saturday afternoon at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

The Tigers defeated the Warriors by scores of 7-1 and 7-5, getting two wins back after IWC was forced earlier in the week to forfeit three MCC wins this year as the result of using an ineligible player. Wesleyan improved to 8-9 in conference play (15-28 overall) and closed within 1 1/2 games of the Warriors, who are now 9-6 in the MCC (21-15 overall).

IWC displayed some of its most consistent and opportunistic offense of the season, scoring seven times on eight hits in both games. The Tigers scored in five different innings in both games and had several big two-out hits in both games.

Ryan Doeppel (Jr.-Arcadia, Calif.) delivered the first big hit of the afternoon, hitting a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the first inning in the opener for a 3-0 Wesleyan lead. The Tigers would add single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, with Marco Prieto (Sr.-Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) hitting a solo home run, Corey Amerson (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Texas) singling in a run in the third and Christian Arredondo (Sr.-Sun Valley, Calif.) delivering a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The run support was plenty for Erik Allen (Sr.-Monrovia, Calif.), who pitched six innings and allowed four hits and one run while striking out five and walking two. Allen won his fifth game of the year, and Darryl Sexton (Jr.-Clinton, Iowa) pitched a hitless seventh inning to close it out.

The Warriors were much tougher to shake in the second game, getting a leadoff home run from Tevin Padgett to start the game and coming back several times after IWC took the lead. The Tigers scored twice in the second and once in the third for a 3-1 lead as Elliot Armstrong (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) tripled in a run in the first and walked to score another in the second, but Waldorf scored twice in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

The visitors added a run in the fourth to take the lead, but Wesleyan came back with two in the bottom of the fourth as Michael Mendoza (Sr.-San Gabriel, Calif.) singled for his second RBI of the game and Armstrong later scored on a wild pitch. Waldorf tied the game again in the top of the fifth as Shawn Palmer singled to center to drive in a run, but IWC took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning as Amerson scored from second after Waldorf catcher Jeremy Dunford threw the ball away down the right field line after a dropped third strike.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth, but Waldorf threatened in the seventh, putting runners on the corners with one out when Lance McFeely lined out to a diving stab by Bobby Lloyd (Sr.-Coalinga, Calif.), who threw to first for a double play to end the game.

Josh Kwasny (Jr.-Mokena, Ill.) picked up the win in relief in the second game, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing three hits and one run while striking out one and walking two. Armstrong had a pair of hits, two RBIs and scored three times and also walked twice in reaching base in all four trips to the plate.

The Tigers and Warriors will close out their three-game series Sunday afternoon with a single nine-inning game starting at 1 p.m. at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.
