COLUMBIA, KY. - The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team had a tough weekend in Kentucky, losing four games to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College in a weekend series concluding Sunday.

IWC was swept in a pair of doubleheaders, losing by 5-1 and 6-1 scores on Saturday and by identical 5-4 scores in both games on Sunday. The Tigers lost both games on Sunday in their final at bat, including the series finale in extra innings, and come back home with a 3-5 record on the season. Lindsey Wilson improved to 8-4 this year.

The Tigers struggled offensively on Saturday, recording just seven hits over the two games. Five came in the opener, in which Lindsey Wilson scored three times in the first inning for an early lead. IWC finally broke through in the top of the fifth with a double by Michael Mendoza (Sr.-San Gabriel, Calif.) to score Bobby Lloyd (Sr.-Coalinga, Calif.) with what would turn out to be the lone run for Wesleyan. Jacob Sanchez (Sr.-Brawley, Calif.) took the loss for Wesleyan, striking out eight in a complete game but allowing seven hits and five runs.

IWC recorded just two hits in Saturday's second game but hung close, trailing just 2-1 in the top of the sixth after Mendoza hit another double to deep left-center allowing Neil Yemm (Sr.-Bartonville, Ill.) to score. The Blue Raiders rebounded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, chasing starter Erik Allen (Sr.-Monrovia, Calif.) from the game. Allen finished allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) in 5 1/3 innings.

Iowa Wesleyan's offense came around Sunday, and a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning by Marco Prieto (Sr.-Toa Baja, Puerto, Rico) sent Drew Koeppel (Sr.-Bartonville, Ill.) home and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Blue Raiders would score three in the third and one in the fifth for a 4-1 lead, but Koeppel and Ryan Doeppel (Jr.-Arcadia, Calif.) drove in runs in the sixth to make it 4-3 and Mendoza hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh to tie the game. Lindsey Wilson loaded the bases with no outs, though, and scored the winning run when Jeff Kerian was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The final game of the weekend brought similar heartbreak for the Tigers. Wesleyan got the early jump with three runs in the third, including an RBI single by Mendoza and a two-run double by Koeppel. Lindsey Wilson rallied for four runs over the next three innings, but IWC tied it back up when Corey Amerson (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Texas) singled to drive in Doeppel. The game went extra innings into the bottom of the ninth, when the Blue Raiders scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Adam Peacock to score Tyler Bernard. Darryl Sexton (Jr.-Clinton, Iowa) took the loss in relief, throwing four innings and allowing three hits but the winning run in the ninth.

Mendoza led the Tigers with six hits on the weekend as well as four RBIs. Koeppel added four hits and three runs batted in.

Iowa Wesleyan will be back in action over spring break, traveling from March 2-11 and starting out in St. Louis, Mo., with games March 2-3 against Missouri Baptist University and the University of St. Francis (Ind.).
