Tiger golfers 16th after first day of Fun City Classic
BURLINGTON - St. Ambrose University leads after the first round while the Iowa Wesleyan College men's golf team had a tough opening day on the first day of IWC's annual Fun City Classic held at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Fighting Bees hold a one stroke lead over Iowa Western Community College, with a pack of schools not far behind. A total of eight teams are within 13 shots of the lead after the first of two days on the par-72, 7,114-yard course.

Wesleyan meanwhile finished the first day in 16th of 17 teams. The Tigers shot a team score of 338, 41 strokes behind St. Ambrose's 297, as a young team worked its way around the course. Zach Hale (Jr.-Indianola, Iowa) and Blake Mitchell (So.-Loveland, Colo.) both finished with matching rounds of 82 to tie for 64th individually, with Hale shooting 37-45 and Mitchell posting a 39 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine.

Kyle Emerson (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) shot a round of 86 to tie for 81st individually, while Clint Phelps (Jr.-Quincy, Ill.) is tied for 86th after a Tuesday score of 88. Trent Hoekstra (Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out the Tigers' scoring by carding a 95 to finish 98th on the first day.

St. Ambrose is trailed by Iowa Western (298), with Viterbo (Wis.) University third at 303. Wheaton (Ill.) College is at 308 after one day, while Ashford University, Mount Mercy University and the St. Ambrose White team are all at 309 and Dodge City (Kan.) CC is at 310. Mariano Rossi of Dodge City leads individually after the first round after shooting five-under par 67, while Travis England of St. Ambrose, Patrick Goodhue of Iowa Western and Austin Worner of Illinois Central CC are all tied for second after shooting two-under par 70.

The Fun City Classic will wrap up with second round play Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
