MOUNT PLEASANT -Iowa Wesleyan College soccer players Jessica Ryan-Cheeley (Sr.-Burlington, Iowa) and Albert Michael (Fr.-St. Johns, Antigua) were named honorable mention selections as the Midwest Collegiate Conference released its men's and women's soccer all-conference teams Monday.
Cheeley received all-conference honors for the first time in a career in which she ranked among the better players in the school's 15-year history of playing women's soccer. This past season she scored three goals and was the Tigers' leader on defense, a source of experience on a young team that finished 1-15-1 overall.
Cheeley, the former Jessica Ryan who was married in the spring, played two years as a forward before moving to defense for her last two years, but still finished her career as the second-leading goal- and point-scorer in school history with 21 career goals and 48 career points. Only Jaimee Cushman (1998-2001) scored more goals (29) and points (69) in a career. As a sophomore in 2008 Cheeley tied a then-school record for goals in a season with ten goals, and she was also a part of the 2009 Tiger team which won seven matches, tied for the most wins in a season in school history.
Michael led the Wesleyan men's soccer team as a freshman this season in scoring with five goals and 11 points total. He scored the game-winning goal in the Tigers' season opener against Concordia (Neb.) University and was the team's most potent offensive threat, scoring five times despite finishing third on the team in shots taken. He played on an IWC team that finished 2-13-1 overall this year, losing eight matches by one goal.
