Mount Pleasant, Iowa - October 12, 2017 - Last night's volleyball action featured the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers and the Highlanders of MacMurray College. In a previous meeting earlier this season, Iowa Wesleyan defeated MacMurray 3-1 for their first win of the season. The Tigers were able to complete the sweep of the SLIAC series with another 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18) victory over the Highlanders.
Both teams brought the intensity to start the match. It was a back and forth battle, with no team gaining a clear advantage over the other. Iowa Wesleyan was able to come out with a 26-24 win to take the first set. The Tigers finished with seventeen kills compared to MacMurray's eight kills in the set to take a 1-0 lead.
Iowa Wesleyan kept the momentum going in the second set and easily took the second set 25-15. The Tigers were efficient in their attack game, converting thirteen kills while only committing three attack errors.
In the third set of the night, it was another close set. MacMurray was not ready to give up yet and rallied to complete the comeback to take the set 25-22. Iowa Wesleyan committed ten attack errors in the set, which was a big part of the reason the Tigers were unable to finish out the match in three sets.
The Tigers did not let that get them down, however. They came out in the fourth set, and once again put together a solid attack game. IW finished with thirteen kills and only recorded five attack errors in the set. Iowa Wesleyan took the set 25-18 to take the match 3-1.
Lida Landre (JR/Loomis, CA) and Sydney Ellsworth (JR/Hill AFB, UT) led the Tiger attack in kills. Landre recorded thirteen kills, while Ellsworth was right behind with eleven kills on the night. Ariel Smale (JR/Guntersville, AL) ended the match with forty-four assists in the win for the Tigers. Jenna Murphy (FR/Pella, IA) and Kara Gillis (JR/Lampasas, TX) led Iowa Wesleyan in digs, finishing with thirty and 27 respectively.
Iowa Wesleyan will be back in action tonight against Simpson College. The Tigers host the Storm win a JV/Varsity double-header starting at 5:30 pm.
