Jacksonville, Illinois - September 24, 2017 - The Iowa Wesleyan football team traveled to Jacksonville, Illinois for their second straight road game this season. The Tigers took on MacMurray College in a UMAC matchup, and were looking to bounce back from a loss last week to Martin Luther. The Tigers offense could not get going against the Highlanders, however, and they suffered a 32-14 loss, their second straight conference loss.
Iowa Wesleyan won the toss to open the game and chose to receive. Their opening drive stalled out after six plays, and the Hunter McIntyre was forced to punt. The Highlanders were moving the ball on their opening possession, but Iowa Wesleyan's defense held them out of the end zone. Both defenses were able to shut the offenses down for the remainder of the first quarter.
MacMurray would be the first team to get on the board in the second quarter. They scored on a 15 yard rush with 9:23 remaining in the half. Iowa Wesleyan blocked the extra point, and the Highlanders took a 6-0 lead. The Tiger offense took over and answered with a 12 play, 69 yard drive. The drive was capped off by a seven yard touchdown reception by Tanner Holder (JR/Urbandale, IA), and Iowa Wesleyan took a 7-6 lead after Jeremy Scholbrock (FR/Aurora, MO) converted on the extra point. MacMurray would add another touchdown right before the half to regain the lead. IW would trail 12-7 at the break.
Iowa Wesleyan's offense failed to find the endzone in the third quarter. The defense was also unable to stop MacMurray on two drives. The Highlanders scored fourteen points in the third to take a 26-7 advantage into the fourth quarter.
MacMurray opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown to extend their lead to 32-7 with 13:02 remaining in the game. The Tiger offense came up empty for most of the quarter. Their last drive started with 59 seconds remaining. DeMarcus Collins (FR/Abbeville, LA) drove the Tigers 42 yards on four plays for a the final touchdown of the game. Collins connected with Tanner Holder for a 29 reception and Scholbrock was successful in the extra point attempt. The final touchdown was not enough for the Tigers, and they suffered a 32-14 loss to the Highlanders.
Alex Payne (SR/Richards, MO) and DeMarcus Collins each threw for one touchdown, and Tanner Holder led the Tigers with six receptions and two touchdowns. Damincio White (FR/Dallas, TX) led the Tigers in rushing with twelve carries for 93 yards.
On defense, Daireon Smith (FR/San Antonio, TX) and Julian Carabajal (SR/Morgan Hill, CA) each finished with eleven tackles. Smith had seven solo tackles and assisted on four others, while Carabajal had one solo tackle and assisted on ten others. Jalen Girtman (FR/Gainsville, FL) had three pass breakups and Eric Herron forced a fumble in the loss.
Iowa Wesleyan will return to Bob Evans Field on September 30th. The Tigers will host Eureka College in a 6 pm kickoff in the Tigers second night game of the season. IW is now 1-3 on the season.
Iowa Wesleyan and the Mount Pleasant Kiwanis Club will be hosting a Youth Night at the game, where the first 100 K-8 students in the Mount Pleasant Community School District will get a free t-shirt and glow light. K-8 students in the MPCSD will also get in free to the game.
