New Ulm, Minnesota - September 16, 2017 -  The Iowa Wesleyan University football team traveled to Martin Luther College for a UMAC conference matchup.  The Tigers were coming off a win in last week's first conference game of the season.  Turnovers proved to be costly for Iowa Wesleyan as Martin Luther handed the Tigers a 42-20 loss, their first in UMAC play.

Iowa Wesleyan got off to a bit of a slow start in today's game. Their opening drive stalled out after just three plays, and IW was forced to punt.  Martin Luther capitalized with their first drive, capping a 12 play, 80 yard drive off with a touchdown to take the lead. The Tiger offense continued to struggle in the first quarter. They would turn the ball over on back to back drives. At the end of the first, IW trailed 28-0.

Martin Luther opened the second quarter with a touchdown to extend their lead to 35-0.  Iowa Wesleyan's drive started with 11:53 and IW was finally able to get their offense moving.  Joshua Broadway (SR/Rancho Cucamonga, CA) hauled in an eight yard reception for the Tigers first touchdown of the game. The drive covered 49 yards and took eight plays.  Neither team would score for the remainder of the half, and IW would trail 35-7 at the break.

The Tiger defense came out of the locker room to start the third quarter and held Martin Luther to just 15 yards in their opening drive.  Iowa Wesleyan's offense capitalized when they took over on their next drive.  Alex Payne (SR/Richards, MO) and Joshua Broadway connected for an 18 yard touchdown reception to bring the score to 35-14 with 9:08 left in the quarter.  The touchdown proved to be the only one of the quarter.

Martin Luther added to their lead with a touchdown coming with just under nine minutes remaining in the game.  Iowa Wesleyan didn't take long to answer, scoring a touchdown on their next possession. Joseph Mosley (SO/Cypress, TX) returned Martin Luther's kickoff for an 80 yards and a touchdown.  Mosley's touchdown was the final touchdown of the game for both teams, and it brought the score to 42-20 in favor of the Knights.

Alex Payne completed 16-32 passing attempts for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Rudy Amezcua had seven receptions for 87 yards, while Joshua Broadway had five receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense was led by Kameron Banks (FR/Grand Bay, AL).  Banks finished with 13 tackles, a forced fumble, a sack, and a pass breakup.  Onius Heard (SO/Hazel Green, AL) added eleven tackles, for solo and seven assists.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 23rd. They will travel to MacMurray College for a 1 pm kickoff.  Iowa Wesleyan's overall record is now 1-2 on the season.
