Mount Pleasant, Iowa - September 9, 2017 - The Iowa Wesleyan University women's soccer team hosted Mount Mary College this morning in a non-conference match up. Chris Early and the Tigers won the first game of the season with a 3-2 victory over the Blue Angels.
In the first half of play, both teams were unable to find the back of the net. The Tigers were outshot 10-8 in the opening period. Both goalies each recorded four saves in the period as well.
The Tigers were finally able to break through in the second half, scoring their first goal just over seven minutes into the period. Grace Alongi (FR/Rock Island, IL) scored her first goal of the season to give IW the 1-0 advantage. Alongi extended the Tiger lead with her second goal seven minutes later. Mount Mary cut into the Tiger lead with a goal of their own.
Grace Alongi scored her third goal of the game to pick up a hat trick and put the Tigers up 3-1. With just under ten minutes remaining, Mount Mary brought the score back within one goal. Iowa Wesleyan's defense stepped up to hold the Blue Angels from scoring to secure the 3-2 win.
Alongi had a team high nine shots, including five on goal in the win. Four other Tigers each had three shots on goal. Destiny Colon (FR/Colorado Springs, CO) saw eight shots during the course of the game and recorded six saves in the win.
Iowa Wesleyan will return to action on Tuesday, September 12. They will host Faith Baptist Bible College at 4 pm at East Lake Park. The Tigers are now 1-2 overall this season.
