Baseball Ends Season with Sweep of Greenville
Game 1
Game 2
Greenville University
Iowa Wesleyan

Mount Pleasant, IA – May 3, 2017 – The Iowa Wesleyan University baseball team played their final series of the 2017 season yesterday at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.  The Tigers hosted Greenville College, who entered the day with a chance to be the number one seed in the conference tournament. Iowa Wesleyan was able to shut down the Panthers' chances at the number one seed after taking both games of the day by scores of 3-1 and 4-3.

In the opening game of the double header, the Tigers had Austin Christian (JR/Arlington, TX) on the mound. He gave up one run in the second inning but that would be the only one of the game.  Christian threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and five strikeouts against the Panthers.

After giving up a run in the second, Iowa Wesleyan was able to take the lead in the fourth inning.  Jacob Leonard (FR/Aurora, IL) started the inning off with a single up the middle, and Tanner Anderson (SR/Vermillion, SD) advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. Bases were loaded with two outs when Joshua Sanchez (JR/Fountain, CO) came to the plate. Sanchez doubled through the right side to drive in two runs.

The fifth inning was scoreless for both teams, and the Tigers kept Greenville from scoring in the top of the sixth as well.  Iowa Wesleyan came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and extended their lead.  Tanner Anderson led the inning off by drawing a walk, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Urevich (FR/Wentzville, MO).  Anderson moved to third when Alex Payne (JR/Nevada, MO) hit a sacrifice fly, and would score with an RBI single by Parker Leland (SO/Parker, CO).

Iowa Wesleyan sat down the first three batters they faced in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 3-1 victory.  Christian improved to 6-5 on the season after earning the win.  Joshua Sanchez led the Tigers with 2 RBIs.

In the final game of the day, both offenses were able to get things going a little more than the first game.  IW was out hit by Greenville 11-7, but the Tigers were able to make their hits count.

The Tigers took an early lead over the Panthers, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Tanner Anderson and Connor Urevich each singled with two outs, and Alex Payne drove them both in with a double for the first runs of the game.  Greenville would come back and tie the game up at 2-2 in the top of the third inning.

The next three and a half innings did not see either team score, and Greenville would come to the plate in the top of the seventh. They recorded three hits and scored one run to go in front.  Iowa Wesleyan answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Travis Kostello (SR/St. Louis, MO) drew a leadoff walk for IW, and Kyle Divelbiss (SO/Des Plaines, IL) reached on an error to put two runners on base.  Jacob Leonard drove in Kostello with a singled through the right side. Divelbiss scored the final run of the inning when Tanner Anderson grounded out to the first baseman.

Iowa Wesleyan held Greenville scoreless in the final two innings, and they were able to complete the comeback to take the series from the Panthers.  Everett Swinson (FR/Chicago Heights, IL) received his first win of the season, and Nick Fencl picked up the save.  Connor Urevich went 2-4 in the game, and Alex Payne had a team high two RBIs. The Tigers finished the season 15-22 and 9-13 in conference play.
