Softball Extends Win Streak to Four with Sweep of MacMurray
Game 1
Game 2
Iowa Wesleyan
MacMurray College

Jacksonville, IL – With the season winding down, Iowa Wesleyan traveled to MacMurray College for their second to last SLIAC double header.  The Tigers were coming off two wins from Sunday where Coach Hampton earned his 601 career win as the head coach of Tiger Softball.  They were looking to extend their win streak, and were successful with wins of 13-2 and 11-2 over the Highlanders.

Iowa Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead to start the day.  They scored two runs off of two hits in the first inning. Caitlin O'Neill (SR/Princeton, IA) led the game off with a double, and Kassie Vazquez (SR/Ainsworth, IA) singled during the next at bat to drive in the first run. Vazquez would later score on a passed ball to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Sheridan extended the Tiger lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning with a leadoff home run. IW added a run in the top of the third and three runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead over MacMurray. Iowa Wesleyan used two hits and an error to score their runs in the fourth inning.

The Highlanders scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Tiger defense was solid throughout the game.  Iowa Wesleyan came to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and scored six runs to take a 13-2 lead over MacMurray.  The Highlanders committed three errors and IW only had one hit in the inning.

Three batters came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Highlanders.  Samantha McIlwain (JR/Boone, IA) and the Tigers were able to sit the batters down in order to secure a 13-2 victory in five innings of play. Kassie Vazquez had a team had three runs batted in for IW in the win.

Iowa Wesleyan once again got off to a fast start to begin the second game.  They scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning with the help of four hits.  The first two batters reached for the Tigers, and McKenzie Copher (SO/Worth, IL) doubled to drive in the first two runs of the game. Julie Dodd (SO/Rock Falls, IL) drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt, and the final run of the inning was scored on a passed ball.

Neither team scored in the next three innings, but the Tigers would add two more runs in the top of the fifth. McKenzie Copher led the inning off with a double and Julie Dodd followed with a single to put two runners on base for IW. Sheridan Gealow (JR/Huxley, IA) grounded out, but both Dodd and Copher would score on the play thanks to a Highlander error.

MacMurray scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after recording two hits. The Tigers plated five runs in their next at bat. Julie Dodd had an RBI double to score the first run of the inning. Sydnee Stalker (SO/Ottawa, IL) hit an RBI single, and Sheridan Gealow had an RBI double to bring the score to 9-2.  The final two runs for the Tigers would come off a passed ball and an RBI double by Caitlin O'Neill. Iowa Wesleyan would hold the Highlanders scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning and go on to win 11-2 for the sweep.

Julie Dodd pitched a complete game for IW, striking out four batters in the game.  McKenzie Copher, Dodd, and Sheridan Gealow each led the Tigers with two RBIs in the win.

Iowa Wesleyan will wrap up the season this weekend with a double header against Fontbonne University.  The first pitch is set for 1 pm on Saturday, April 29.  The Tigers improve to 14-20 overall and 7-9 in SLIAC play.
