Mount Pleasant, Iowa – The Iowa Wesleyan University Baseball team hosted a non-conference single game last night. The Tigers hosted Cornell College and were looking to end a four game losing streak. The game was tied going into the ninth inning, but the Rams were able to score five runs in the top of the inning to take the lead. IW was unable to complete the comeback and fell 7-3 to Cornell.
Iowa Wesleyan was the first team to get on the board after scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Leonard (FR/Aurora, IL) singled to right field, and Tanner Anderson (SR/Vermillion, SD) followed with an RBI double to center field. The lead would be short lived, however, with the Rams tying the game up at 1-1 in the top of the second. The Tigers would get a run on the play, tying the game back up at 2-2.
Both teams would be held scoreless for the next five innings. Cornell came up to the plate in the top of the ninth inning and broke the tie with a leadoff home run. They would add four more runs before the inning was over, holding a 7-2 advantage over the Tigers. IW found themselves in a hole entering the bottom of the ninth, but it they were not out of it as Cornell's pitcher struggled to start the inning. The Tigers had bases loaded with one out but only managed to get one run across the plate to fall 7-3.
The Tigers overall record is now 9-20. Iowa Wesleyan will return to action on Wednesday, April 19. They are set to travel to Eureka College for a single game starting at 3:30 pm.
