MONTGOMERY, ALA. - Michael Mendoza (Sr.-San Gabriel, Calif.) hit a two-run double as part of a three-run fifth inning and the Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team defeated Auburn University-Montgomery 5-3 to split a doubleheader Tuesday.
The Tigers bounced back from an 8-6 loss in the first game of the twinbill to win one of two from the No. 13 ranked team in the NAIA. IWC played its sixth and seventh games of the season against nationally ranked teams, improving to 4-3 against ranked opponents and 7-8 overall this year.
Elliot Armstrong (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) and Todd Christensen (Sr.-Redondo Beach, Calif.) both had two hits in the second game, and Christensen, Drew Koeppel (Sr.-Bartonville, Ill.) and Andrew Jurgesmeyer (Sr.-Mexico, Mo.) all drove in solo runs. Koeppel followed up Mendoza's fifth inning double with an RBI single in the fifth as Wesleyan pulled out to a 5-1 lead over Auburn-Montgomery (16-9 overall).
Darryl Sexton (Jr.-Clinton, Iowa) pitched four innings and allowed six hits and one unearned run to pick up the win. Neil Yemm (Sr.-Bartonville, Ill.) threw two hitless innings in relief of Sexton before the Warhawks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh against Colton Hopwood (Sr.-Bloomfield, Iowa).
IWC hammered out 13 hits in the nine-inning first game of the doubleheader but committed two costly errors leading to four unearned runs for Auburn-Montgomery. The Warhawks scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead that the Tigers never could recover from despite scoring three times in the sixth and one more in the eighth.
Ryan Daniels (Jr.-Duarte, Calif.) and Louis Rivera (Sr.-San Juan, Puerto Rico) both had three hits and two RBIs each in the opener, while Mendoza and Koeppel both also added two hits each. Josh Kwasny (Jr.-Mokena, Ill.) picked up the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and eight runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings. Marcus Ledbetter (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) threw 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed one hit.
The Tigers face another top-notch opponent on Wednesday when they take on eighth-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) University in a single nine-inning game in Montgomery. Wesleyan lost a 6-5 decision to the Eagles on Monday in an 11-inning game.
